It sure seems like the fleas are out in full force this year! My husband put out some Orthro granuals= tossed them in the pens , around the pens and all over the dog yard. We washed the dogs in Hartz flea and tick shampoo and applied the 1X a month, Hartz 3 in 1 flea and Tick drops but thy're stilll bad. I just dusted em with some cat flea powder I had in the cabinet becasue I saw some crawling on the dogs belly! Gross! :x

So add your flea treatment and remedies here before I accidentlly poison the dogs trying to exterminate fleas! How much can a flea take!

Find some flea dip, it has like malathion (i think it is) in it, and you just mix it with water and put the hound in it and just rub it in all over them. I works for like a month I think. I do it to my hounds, as well as our cocker spaniel dogs. Works pretty good. You can find it at the vet or most feed stores have something like it.

I'd rub the dogs real well with 5% Sevin dust and sprinkle some in their bedding to take care of the immediate problem. Then, apply Bio Spot topical to the dog once a month. Bio Spot not only kills ticks and fleas, but repels them too. I was skeptical of that until I tried it 2 years and found it's true. You can get Bio Spot at the local Co-op, WalMart or most dog supply catalogs. At least that's what I do and I never have fleas.

Frontline and Advantage work very well and last a long time. They are both expensive but I think they are worth it. They worked without me having to treat the whole house-just the dogs. I've had at least 4 dogs in my house for several years now. The Advantage lasted about 6 months and the Frontline has so far lasted almost a year. This is not with regular treatment, this is 1 treatment of each dog that has far outlasted what the product claimed it could do. I've tried Bio Spot and it didn't work at all. I read where someone posted it isn't waterproof and my dogs get wet a lot so that's probably why it didn't work. I have no respect for the usual pet store flea baths and shampoos because most of them knock the fleas out in the bath water but the fleas recover instead of being killed. If you wash the dog outside and dump the water on the ground all you've got is a clean dog soon to be infested again with some really clean fleas.

The only real problem with I think Advantage is that if you have cats and there is any way that the cats come in contact with the dogs and possibly ingest the medication it can poison them. If you are in fact talkin about a coon dog and not a regular house dog though I dont think you'd have to worry at all about a cat getting too close :D

The other thing you can do is spray your yard with Ortho's bug b gone. We have a real bad tick problem here this year and I had to spray the yard becasue it seemed like every time we went out one of us had a tick walking on us. It works great on both fleas and ticks. I use frontline and Advantix and they both work well but the last thing you need are ticks and fleas getting into the house. I prefer the spray over granules because once the spray is dry it is safe for both pets and people. The tick problem last year was so bad that, despite using frontline, I had to pull a tick off the dog each time nearly we hunted, it was that bad.

first i wouldnt use anything for a cat on your dog or vice versa..for the simple fact there is alot of stuff both ways that will harm one or the other. when fleas and ticks are bad use the frontline or hartz or whichever every 3 weeks instead of every 4! it wares off quicker when they are bad! the collars don't work because they just jump over them! seven granuals also work extremely well!

I work at a vets office so coming from my experience there the best thing to do is remove the dogs from the yard and spray with a treatment you can buy at Home Depot. Unfortunately I do not know how to spell it so heres the pronunciation Die-ia-sin. Apparently you can no longer use lime because the fleas live off of it and they have gradually become immune to Sevindust.

If your dog is too eat up before you spray the yard so that you cant stand it, you can go to your vet and get them to give you a capstar. This is a pill that when taken the fleas will begin to die within 30 seconds and will continue to die and be repelled for two days but only two days. After that 48 hour period the fleas can once more get on the dog. This gives you time to remove them from the yard. We specialize also in using Revolution flea prevention after the fact because along with fleas it also protects from ear mites, heartworm and mange.

Hope all this has helped!

Heather
