In our last show the judge said she was kicking her right hind leg out in her gait. I had the vet check her and he said she appeared sore. Without putting her under and x-raying, there is no way to tell for sure. So we are working her a little (running) and seeing how she responds. Hoping it is just a sprain. If it is Hip displaysia, are we done showing and hunting her? The judge said it was the only reason he didn't pick her for Best of Show.

I don't know about bench shows but if the dog has hip dysplasia you can never breed her-it is inherited. The best thing to do is get the xray if the leg doesn't start moving normally in a couple of weeks.

We knew we definately couldn't breed her with this. That would be just wrong. What I'm thinking is it will only get worse and it would be a waste to show her. and in the hunting I figure it would be cruel to run her that hard besides the fact that she may not be up to par. I took her running a little last night and this morning when I took her down the stairs, she didn't put her leg down at all. That has me pretty concerned. I wish I knew what she was thinking. She also seemed to walk and run with that leg a little stiff as if she was trying to protect it. For now we are trying to let it work out hoping for just a sprain. But because I have a guilty concious, I probably won't go much farther than 1 1/2 weeks of training and no "very noticable" improvement without an x-ray. What would you do?

Looks like the mange locked our fate before the hip. Everyone please pray that by some chance it's not mange. That is all that will save us now.

How old is this dog? Some dogs still growing can get sore just from growing. It depends on how severe the displacement becomes, if the dog is displastic. I took in a bird dog once that was displastic and she hunted fine for two days straight before she needed a rest for a day or two. It all depends on the specific situation. Some dog have rather severe dispacia and do not show severe symptoms. Some have a mild displacement and show severe symptoms.

She is 1 year. Even just a little exercise makes her favor the leg. We have had her on rest for a little over a week and she is still favoring the leg. She also gets 2 baby asprin in the morning and evening. We will probably have her x-rayed next week if we exercise her and she won't put weight on it again.
