My almost 3 year old female and I just got back from the vet. She has had a limb for about 6 weeks, not bad but noticeable most of the time. Doc says she has blown her stifle (the equivalent of our ACL), Doc wants to operate to fix it, he says he does about 20 a year. If we don't operate she will have arthritis take over the joint and will be 3 legged in a year. The cost is a concern but, i do love her, she is a very nice hound. My fear is spending the money and not seeing a full recovery which is a possibility. To top it off I was going to breed her next week and that would have to wait if we operate. Any one out there have any experience with this? Thanks BD |

We had a yard dog that had one. Due to cost and the chance to re-tear again (more vunerable), it was chosen not too. Dog lived to be 15 years with no trouble. Check out this site: http://www.tiggerpoz.com/ |

My brother had that done to his older house dog. Dog still limps after and its been about 1.5 years. It doesn't run with its leg up like it did before but walks with a slight limp. Personally if the dog doesn't seem to be in pain and can get along I won't do it. If the dog is in pain or really is having a hard time then I would consider it. His wasn't in pain and just raised its leg when it ran. I would have let it be on a 10+ years dog. |

Thanks ugean. Our herd vet was out today and he recommended to wait it out and see what happens by December. She is crazy nuts that she isn't going to the woods though. That hurts me as much as her. BD |

One of my buddies had a german shorthair pointer with this problem. Of course it happened just 3 wks before our annual pheasant hunt in south dakota. He had the surgery done in november, and the dog was just about totally normal in 3- 4 months. She missed out on the trip, but we still killed plenty of birds with my labs:) I don't know the exact cost but I think it was $2500- $3000 |
