my 3 year old male redbone has started licking the inside of his back legs, between some toes, & around his anus to the point of making them raw. the vet gives him some steroids for the itching & it clears up. 2 months later same thing. this has happened 4 times now in the last year. now the vet is suspecting food allergies. early on he was a picky eater. he'd eat a certain food & then he'd ignore it. I told the wife to leave it & he'd eat it when he was hungry enough but she'd have no part of that & buy something else that he'd eat for awhile & then ignore & she's buy another brand. I got tired of arguing so he finally ended eating canned alpo that she's mix with rice & I swear this is true she'd also mix with Costco roast chicken. the other thing about her feeding habits is that he is about 10-15 pounds overweight. this dog has her trained!! between the food & treats he's kept her running. when she's not around he NEVER hassles me for treats. so now with the possible allergies another knee jerk reaction from her & there's been 4 days of internet research & an earful for me about various foods but she's finally a believer in give him the food & eventually he'll eat it.
so- we just bought some of the salmon based grain free taste of the wilderness dry food & you'd think we gave him a rib-eye steak. he wolfed right down. so now he's on the grain free dry food & "check-ups" (Costco brand dental cleaning treats ) only. time will tell if this makes a difference.
so besides my rant I guess I'd like to ask if anyone else is seeing any symptoms of food allergies & what they've done about if they have? it was extremely rare to hear about this when I was a kid. I'm wondering if the chemicals we're giving them ( heartguard, frontline, etc ) & all the chemicals & fillers they put into commercial feed & treats might be a cause for these reactions.........
