Post subject:  Age to neuter a redbone?

I've got a couple of male redbone puppies. I have decided that I will not be breeding them and am planning to have them neutered at some point.

They grow and mature slower than a lot of other breeds, so I was wondering what is the best age to get them neutered. I want them still to hunt well and have a good, muscular look.

The vet is pushing for 6 months, but he even admitted that this breed won't look very mature at that point.

Any experience in what is too young for redbones?

How do they hunt if neutered?

6 months old is fine to neuter.

As far as hunting a neutered dog, sexual reproduction organs is not what makes hunting dogs hunt. Sexual organs are for reproducing, not hunting.

I had a dog neutered while back and he was about 5 1/2 or 6 months
I wanted to wait until 1-1/2 or 2 and the vet said young would be better on the did not even bother him the hood around his neck did.

Thanks for the responses - I'll schedule them for 6 months!
