my hound has a spot on his hind quarter about dime size that has been bare for months and wont grow hair back .he don't scratch at it and it doesn't hurt him.the skin has a little bit of a lump there. ive tried putting Vaseline on it and Neosporin but doesn't seem to help? Does anyone have any idea what this is and how to cure it ?

Old timer a few months back told me what it was but I forget exactly what he called it, said to make sure you open it up and get it healed up right or it can cause cancer but I don't know that for sure. The one on my female had a scab on it so I opened it up and put some EMT gel on it and it healed up and started to grow hair back.

Thanks for the replies .Im not sure what you mean by open it up ? A dog groomer told me to try taking the top layer of skin off with one of those rough boards they use on peoples feet. Then put antibiotic on it and see if it would grow back.So far it didn't change.

That's what I meant, make sure its not scabbed over and whatever you put on it is getting inside to draw out any infection or whatever is causing the problem.

I just recently had 3 of my dog get dime sized spots with no hair on them one dog healed up but one has been that way for six weeks & I just noticed another dog had one yesterday. The Vet thought it was ring worm & told me just to put some Lotriman cream or Tinactin or something like that. I just put it on this afternoon so I don't know if it will work but I know it won't hurt.

had to have this spot surgically removed .all good now .Vet said it was possibly the dogs system overreacting to a small skin injury. Thanks for the responses.
