there are times when my redbone reeks of a chemical smell. sometimes he even passes chemical smelling gas. has anyone using frontline or heart guard noticed such an odor? i ask that because it seems to occur just after he is treated with those drugs. there's nothing in his diet with that type of odor.

My wife who works for a vet says it could be anal glands or intestinal parasites. If it is parasites the heartguard could be doing it because it has a low dose of dewormer. She says to have a stool sample checked by ur vet. If ur dog does have worms the heartguard can take care of it if purchased through the vet because they have a guaranteed product that is not the same as whats in a store. I hope this helps

Does it seem almost like vinegar/acetone but not quite? One of ours ended up with failing kidneys from unknown cause. It made her smell like that. Licking or absorbing the chemicals in those medicines can cause kidney problems.

Anal glands wouldn't smell like chemicals they smell godawful like sewage and poo and farts all combined.

we use pet armor for fleas & heart guard for heartworms. we were dosing with both at the same time. we started staggering them 2 weeks apart. the odor is gone. could be a coincincidence. might have been a reaction to the combination.??????????????

Could be. Try to notice if you smell it again over the next few weeks. I would catch random whiffs of it with the dog that had kidney problems until it got severe then we smelled it all the time. If you don't keep smelling it probably it's the combination.

Start the old routine over; if the odor starts again; you will know that was the cause, if the odor doesn't start again, you will know that it was from an unknown source that corrected itself about the time you changed your routine, and you still want know what really caused it.
