Hey guys I am new to this site and had a question for yall. I have got a pair of 7 month old blueticks. I was wondering what age you usually start breeding your hounds. Also what time of the year or month do you shoot for to breed them? Thanks

After there 2, preferably 3 yrs old completely broke and hunting good. And when it doesn't interfere with my hunting season. All thou I have had young dogs breed when I wasn't paying enough attention. Had a 10 month old beagle breed a 10 month old JRT and she had a litter on her 1st birthday. Everyone said it wouldn't take and I was hoping not but she had 5 pups and they all made it.

I would see if they are even worth breeding first. I would wait till after second heat cycle at the earliest. I'd try to have them due in spring if cycle allows. Wait until 9th day when she's in and breed. Breed again on 11&13 day also. She will let you and male know when ready.

If she's never had pups before it could be risky. I have a buddy that bred a 7 year old foxhound for the first time and she died at the Vets in labor. Although I had a 10 year old JRT and a 10 year old beagle that both got accidentally bred and they both had litters and were ok. They both had been bred and had pups when they were younger.

Since she's had a litter before it may be ok. I don't prefer to breed at that age but like I said; it's happened by accident here and worked out. You will have to decide for yourself if you are willing to take that chance.
