Hey guys,

So I had this happen to me about a month ago, and I was just wanting to get some perspective on the situation. I bought a hi-tan black and tan from a gentleman nearby. When we first saw the dog, she was lively, energetic, and eating food. He gave her her first 5-1 right there on the spot. We took her home, and for the first night everything seemed fine. She would play with her toys, and we didn't try to feed her because she had just eaten. Well, the first night she threw up in her crate, twice, and was having terrible diarrhea every time we took her outside. The next day she was lethargic, and slept nearly all day. She refused food. We called the breeder, and her took her back to keep her under observation. He took her to his vet, who said it was a stress reaction from the new environment. Long story short, 4 days later she was gone. I'm very confused about what happened here. I've never had a puppy react like that before, and the breeder (who did give us our money back), seemed to act like we had something to do with it.

Thoughts?

It might've had parvo or worms. I took one of my dogs once for having runny poop with blood, and the first thing they asked was if she had been throwing up or not eating. Those three things can be signs that they have parvo and if it's not treated they can die. I think worms can kill them too but I'm not sure.

Thanks guys, that's what I was thinking. Either a reaction to the 5-1 or she contracted it before we got her. :/ Such a shame.

If she had a reaction to the vacination, it would of happened with in an hour or so. She had parvo, she was preexposed before you had gotten her. I see alot of parvo . If mom not vaccinated it seems to be a hire in some cases. It was not your fault.

Thanks Bea. Yeah, we didn't have her long enough to have really made a difference (One day...yeah...). The breeder's attitude just seemed to be really hostile about the whole situation. I can't blame him too much, I was distraught myself, but that puts me at a disadvantage seeing as he's the only breeder of hounds we can find here. Oh well. Not a whole lot I can do at this point. At least she's not suffering any more.

It's most likely that the shot he gave her has not been refrigerated correctly, I buy and do my own shots when I have a litter because it is so much cheaper but you have to make sure that you get them right after shipment or pre-order them with ice packs because if the virus gets to warm it will actually give them parvo instead of preventing it, outta 4 litter I've had it happen to 3 pups all in the same litter, vet said they were to far gone even though it had only been a day.... Parvo is horrible, I'm sorry for your experience, there us also corona virus that is a lot like parvo and its really hard to get rid of and you have to buy a shot that specifically says plus corona to prevent it

This dog got parvo from the vaccine not being refrigerated properly.

Not sure how you can come to that conclussion without knowing all the facts of storage as well as the situtation of what the pup may have been exposed to. Especially when other possibilities can be into play concerning Parvo.

Let's say the vaccine was refrigerated properly -- pup could still die from Parvo as pup just received the the 1st vaccination.

Even pups that have received 2 or 3 vaccinations CAN STILL contract Parvo. Of course vacciantions reduce the chance, but still can happen and does happen on properly vaccinated pups.

I am kinda surprised as you being VET, your comment was that the pup died because the vaccine was not refrigerated properly, especially when you do not know that for a fact and the fact that even vaccinated pups CAN contract Parvo that the vaccine was stored properly.

If the pup had came into contact with the Parvovirus and THEN given the 5 and 1 shot, is it not possible for the puppy to die of parvo?

Given the info the orginal user posted, the Parvo incubation period was in play.

I know TimmsHogandCoonDogs also posted that as his opinion was the vaccine was not refrigerated properly but your a VET and would have expected more than the blanket response of what you posted (This dog got parvo from the vaccine not being refrigerated properly), especially when considering the variables of contracting Parvo, the incubation period, just the one shot given, and etc...

Well I tell you what, I have been practicing for 8 years and I have never claimed to know everything. If you will check my post I am attempting to give FREE advice. Yes, I am a VET and yes I did say "this dog got parvo from the vaccine not being refrigerated properly." I am just trying to help because I love hounds and like to hunt. Buckshot you are right I do/did not have all of the info and basically made a judgement call based on my experience! In order to defend my self I would encourage everyone to visit www. veterinarypartner.com to become further educated. It is a very good website and explains things without the fancy medical stuff.

With that being said, I still say that this puppies vaccines or "vaccine maintenance" were mishandled. Now mishandled includes a wide variety of possibilities. There is a possibility of the vaccines not being properly refrigerated, there is also a possibility of the vaccines not being given properly. There is also a possibility of the environment not being a clean environment and the pup being exposed to parvo before this gentleman purchased her. So Buckshot in some ways you are right and I stand corrected;however, like most houndsmen on this sight, I do speak from experience. And over the last 8 years EVERY breeder and their momma claims to be able to give vaccines and know more than any vet and that's fine. Moreover, as an innocent bystander who has SOME knowledge base it was my personal opinion that this dog got parvo from the vaccines.
Regardless of the argument that could go on for days, THIS GUYS DOG IS DEAD, period! I hope that this doesn't happen again to this poor guy and I hope that someone learns something from this post and the replies!
P.S. Is there any proof that this dog DIDN"T get parvo from the vaccines?
Good luck and good hunting,
Just trying to help

Just like a coin, there is 2 sides.

Is there any proof the dog DID get parvo from the vaccines?

You know as well as me that a Parvo test is a simple test very similar to a human pregnancy test...........The original post did not mention a parvo test or results from a Parvo test.............though the original poster did say that..............He took her to his vet, who said it was a stress reaction from the new environment. --- of course that is 3rd hand info......Vet>>Seller>>Buyer.

Surely a Vet would have administered a Parvo test and surely the seller would have told the buyer the exact diagnosis.............But then again, that is just speculating the situation with not knowing the facts to the complete situation, really no different in speculating the pup acquired parvo from the vaccine not being refrigerated properly with not knowing the facts to the complete situation..........see what I mean?

I hear what you are saying and hopefully my point got across as well..........
I am not one of those vets with an ego. I am open to other opinions but I am not above stating my opinion or defending my opinion.
Thanks for the conversation
Good luck and good hunting,
Doc Neal
