Limit the pups caloric intake. Like others have noted, it's growing too fast for it's skeletal structure.
Limit the calcium. This means choosing a large breed puppy food that has LESS calcium in it than adult food. Puppies metabolism does not allow for self-limiting calcium uptake, as an adult dogs metabolism does. The more calcium a pup eats, the faster......and weaker.......the bones grow. Like your vet said....giving calcium pills is the last thing the pup needs.
Limit strenous exercise........running for extended periods of time.....as in when jogging with you, or roading the dog, no jumping and falls from height for the first year.
When the dogs skeletal structure is MATURE, as in 1 year old, is it safe to let the dog run as long as it wants.
