My father in law has two black and tans. The male is significantly larger than the female and is also much younger. The female cried out in pain the other day and he separated them in different pens but she seems to be significantly swollen. It is breaking my heart to see her like this are there any suggestions why this might be occurring other than the size difference or how we could possibly ease her suffering at all?

If she's in heat swelling is normal. Some have extreme swelling. From a side view one of our dogs literally looks like she has a soup can hanging from the back end when she's in heat.

I know some swelling is normal but this is not normal swelling. I had a blue that looked like you are describing as well. She is painful and raw its very sad. They have been separated for a few days and seems to be improving slightly.
