In the Old Testament, God is vengeful, violent, and the bringer of wrath. While in the New Testament, you see a more kind and loving God....I realize Jesus saved us from our sins, and was resurrected so we may have eternal life. This would probably explain some of it. I also realize that Jesus wasn't around in Old Testament times. I'm just curious what other Christians think about the similarities and differences between the Old and New Testament. I'm excited to hear what you've all got to say.

Adam and Eve sinned-God showed them that a sacrifice was the way to cover their shame. Cain killed Abel and God punished him but did not wipe him or his descendants out. Noah and his family were spared the destruction of the flood after the rest of the people had all those years to repent while Noah was building the boat. Pharoah had all those chances to let the Israelites go but he kept a stone heart. Joseph was mistreated by his brothers but forgave them when he was in a position of power in Egypt. All through the book of Judges God sent leaders to call the Israelites to serve Him and when they did God let them know it was a good thing by holding off their enemies and then when they were unfaithful God let the surrounding people have at them. When Israel was begging for a king so they could be like all their neighbors (Why that made sense I don't know) God let them have one but warned them that kings ask a lot from their subjects and it would not always be as nice as they imagined. David spared Saul's life many times when he could of run him through because David knew that Samuel had annointed Saul as king. David ruled well and kept Israel safe for many years but sinned with Bathsheba, God forgave him but llet him bear the weight of his sin in losing the child and having discord in his family. Two kingdoms of Israel fought and strayed away from God. Nations were sent to punish and drive them back to serving the God of Abraham. (Oh oh, I missed Abraham....go back to Genesis and see how God was merciful to that guy and his many descendants, both Isaac and Ishamael) Israel carried away to Babylon and God kept a remnant safe even while in captivity. Daniel, one of my favorites, served God first and over everything else but still was noted as a great ruler for several kings of Babylon and Persia. Sure, all through the OT theres lots of fighting and God sending judgement but he lined up Israael to be blessed and to bless the nations. They were to be an example for all the pagan nations to see that following THE LORD GOD was the way to go. Through Israel God sent a descendant of King David to be our Savior. Look at what goes on in our times, people all over the earth are hoping for some ruler who can fix all their trouble. (Stalin, Hitler, Roosevelt, Pol Pot, Kennedy, Reagan, name your favorite or least favorite ruler of the last 2000+ years) Sad thing is that they will many times settle for some flawed or evil pretender and miss that our real King needs to be Jesus, who will one day be King over all in spirit and flesh. We need the OT to show us that we are sinners, that God will not always tolerate our sin and that God has made a way for us to be saved. Old and New Testaments work together to teach us, a God of grace planned that. IF God was only about dropping the hammer we would all have been torched a long time ago. Look at today's world and don't miss that there's a lot of God letting sin and evil happen to us, that's the judgement on this world that Adam and Eve set in motion.

A good case is made that Jesus definately had an active role all throught the old testament: start with Genesis 18:1 thru Genesis 18:32. Jesus did not have a human body born of a virgin yet, but HE was there.
