bobcats and fox's both will jump out as you get close to the tree, and i have had a solid coondog that would run a fox about once a year , i guess he would run up on it and the race was on from tree to tree until daybreak , ... try to get to them without useing a light if you can and you will see what is there

When we have a cat in a tree we will wait and let the dogs tree it for at least 45 minuites befor we go in but the longer the better. Then after waiting and drinking coffee only one of us will walk in with as little of light as possible. When we get there we shine the tree with the light as dim as you can see an eye and shoot it out. By waiting the cat gets cold and stiff so is less likely to bail out and keep you chasing your dogs until daylight. If you think you are running cats and have a stay put tree dog try to wait him out. Wait at least 45 min. then like i said sneak in without light. and shine with dim light. Good luck and let me know if it works for you.
Bobcats run a long fast track and generally circle back and tree close to where they have previously run. Some run a mile some run alot further but if they are pressured hard they go up quickly because they have small lungs and not alot of stmina just a hell of alot of speed to get out in front with.
