Well the breeding part will draw a big discussion. I personally like to wait till the male hound is mature enuff. Not a specific age it all depends on the dog itself. Some people have told me if the male knows what to do then he's old enuff to breed. I will never breed my females their first or second cycles. I at least wait till the female is 2 years old if not older. Alot of times it might take this long to find out if the hound is good enuff to risk haveing a litter of pups out of. You never want to just breed a dog that has set in the pen for 3 years and has never treed their own coon.

I started taking my pup along at 5 months old.Just to walk along and play, but what the pup ws getting out of it,and diddnt know was experience being out in the woods in the dark with the other dogs.I have done a few short drags with a coontail, and played with her a little with a dead one.She is getting ready to see a caged coon now that she is 6 mos.All of this is in moderation just a few times to get the taste of things so she will rember it in a couple months when bigger things come along..

As long as she is a COONDOG and you like her and her breeding, you would prolly have great results out of breeding her this time. 2 years old is old enuff to breed a female. I just bred one of mine that is 2 and she is doin great with her pups. Just hope she'll still hunt as good after the pups are weened as she did before she had them.

It still depends highly on the pup. I've been told by alot of old timers not to start them that young cuz they will burn out. But since I have switched from Walkers to Blueticks this is no longer a problem. The female I have with pups out here now treed her first coon by herself at 4 months of age and is still going strong. I'm just waiting to get the pups weened so I can get her ready for the hunts again.
