I like to morning hunt in the summer. It gets hot in Ga. so the mornings are easier on the dogs. Plus it seems that the coons move good in the morning when it gets really hot.

Anyone ever get up early, like hour or so and try it. I've been working with a young dog and not finding many coon, that is in late afternoon early evening. Im trying to watch him alittle to make sure he isn't just goofing off or runin deer. I suppose early morning has got to be better than early evening ,

How do you all go about hunting early mornings? How long before day break do you go out? Arnt the coon usually dened or holed up by then? And do you need a real cold nosed dog?

Coons are like deer, they are not totally nocturnal. They will move right around dark and again right around daylight. We typically turn out around 2 hours before daylight this time of year and get on some pretty good tracks. Like coonhunter said it gets hot here in Ga and this is the coolest time of the night.Plus its not nearly as tiresome to get up a few hours early, as it is to be out half the night, since it don't get dark till 9, and in the heat your waisting your time turning loose right at dark.

Typically I only hunt mornings in the summer or when it is really hot down here. Another reason that I prefer mornings is if there is any dew, it will be that time of the day. Hunting mornings teaches a dog to trail more as you rarely hit a smoking hot track and that is important to me. I hunt 4-5 mornings a week and usually dump the dogs about 5:30 AM and hunt till 8:30-9:00 AM, if it remains cool, will hunt til 9:30 or 10:00.
Adios,
Gary

Agreed,I've seen them crossing road all times of day and night. I like to wait an hour or two after dark to start but can't always wait because I work early. On weekends ill often get up and take them out two hours before daylight. They've done we'll at that time and no where near the traffic to worry about if your hunting near roads. Two weeks ago I have two 7 month old pups I took for a walk at 3 in the afternoon and was surprised to see them strike and get a coon treed at 3:45 in the day light. That was the last thing I expected to see, I was just letting them out for excersize.
