How would you go about asking permission to coon hunt on someones property? :?: What kind of things would you need to say and tell them that you will do? do you need to have written permission?

Thanks buckshot, If you are able to get permission, would that also include you being able to go over there during the day with a pup to walk him,get him used to the woods and everything, and to do training sessions? Do any of you call the land owners house before you go over to see if its a good time for them??

I just always ask for huntin' permission first. If they dont give me pemission I then ask for permission to coon hunt. Most land owners (especially farmers) are eager to allow coonhuntin' due to high population of coon and less coon hunters.

I'm looking to get permission to run my digs on, but havnt really gone around and asked people before. Most of the land I hunt now was just offered to me to hunt. Are there any things that can give you an edge when you ask? And how do some of you start your convos with the land owner? And have you found it hard to get permission to hunt raccoons? To me it seems like it would be easier then get land to hunt deer.

For certain you need to ask but how? I recently called a land owner rather than cold-calling visit to his house and got permission - but is that right? Go in person or call? One guy i can't find a number for but know where he lives. Should i drop by or ask his wife on facebook for his number?

Always ask in person if at all possible. I like to go around right when it starts to get nice in the spring. Drive around in the afternoon and most farmers will be out working on equipment in the barn. This is a great time to catch them when they're not too busy yet. Always be clean and presentable and polite. Most won't hesitate if they know they won't be liable if you get hurt.

Find a nice girl who likes to hunt to go with when you to ask permission. People have a hard time saying no to them, especially if they are friendly.

I've gotten some requests for a blank copy of the permission slips I use for hunting. So here you go (below). Not everyone will sign one for you. I've had plenty of farmers give me permission but not want to sign a form. They feel it's easier to deny you had permission if you get hurt out there. Despite the law protecting them from you suing them unless they are blatantly negligent. They feel its better for them. And let me tell you its not you they're afraid of suing them. It's your insurance company. A few years ago I fell and got hurt badly. The insurance company contacted me wanting to know who owned the land so they could recover their costs from the persons home owners insurance. I sent them the permission slip said I was hunting and they couldn't sue. They came back to me two more times. Each time I sent them a copy of the permission slip and they went away. The land owner never even knew about it. So these work!!!

I've also had run ins with people that think they own the land and try to kick me off. I pull out my slip and say I have permission so leave me alone. They get mad but they know they can't do a thing about it. They weren't going to be my friend anyway. It also works if you get stopped by the DEC or a cop. So they don't have to wake the farmer up. Just an all round good thing to have.

They're pretty generic but they have all the right wording. Some people also like it because if they have to they can get a hold of you. They keep half and you keep half. I keep a folder right in the truck with all my forms and a few blank ones. Along with copies of the tax map for that area. Happy Hunting!!!
