I could be mistaken, but I thought they were supposed to be dropped before birth. :?: I haven't had the opportunity yet to handle newborn puppies, but every male pup (ages 6 weeks and up) I've ever seen has had its testes decended.

That's the main reason you can not show a dog in UKC until its 6 months old. To give them time to drop down.

Well, ya learn something new every day. Or at least on those days when you bother to get out of bed. ;-)

I'm glad I know that now, rather than wondering what's wrong with a puppy first time I see one that young.

The technical name is cryptorchidism or monorchidism...
When I got my one-nutter, I did some research. Usually, the missing nut is there, but hidden inside. The scientific thinking is that there is a complex genetic cause for this problem. It does not affect hunting ability or ability to reproduce. However, it is a disqualifying flaw on the bench, and can be passed down to offspring.
If the other one doesn't drop by 6 mos., it probably will not ever come down because there is a ring it has to pass through that becomes less flexible. Occasionally, the second nut does come down later than that, but by two years there is virtually no chance the other one will descend. Vets sometimes recommend neutering because the hidden testicle is more likely to become cancerous, but the increased risk is still not very high and plenty of one-nutters live to a ripe old age.
A very few dogs have a different issue--an oversized ring-- and are able to pull one or both testicles up and let it drop throughout their life. It will disappear when they are cold or scared. A dog with this trait might hide his from a judge, but still be eligible to show.
