What effect does the weather have on when the coons move or not? I've always heard you'll never get a coon in a tree during a full moon. Also do coon actually move in the rain or do they den up and wait till after the rain? Thanks.

I dont know about way down south.. but here way up North.. the coon will run in the rain.. and on a full moon night.. they are moving LATE.. and its hard to put em in the trees.. i get more of them on the ground.. in a culvert or in a brush pile on full moon nights.. seems like a lot longer ground runs on a full moon night! right now the coon are moving well here between 1:30am and 5am..

I think temperature and barometric pressure effects tjeir movement more than most anything else. On a warm evening they will often set up in a tree and "air out" rather than come down and feed right away. Barometric pressure change can warn them a storm is coming and bring them out to feed even in daylight hours. Often just watching deer and other wildlife activity can give you a good idea of coon activity. My old hound really starts "talking" to me when he thinks we should be coon hunting! :P

i agree with susie on the fact that they tend to stay on the ground longer on a full moon, but we tend to tree a lot of coons....eventually. when their on the ground they like to tap trees, but usually our dogs end up treein. hell, two weeks ago, it was a pretty full moon and my gyp treed the biggest damn coon ive ever seen in a big damn tree. the thing is, when there is a full moon, a coon will tend look up at the moon instead of down at the dogs, thus making it harder to find.
