I have coon hunted the past year or so and I really enjoy it. I have decided I want to buy a dog. I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on hounds?

Ahem, I prefer walkers and B&T's. Although I've seen some pretty bad-a$$ blueticks, but most of them I've hunted with are slow, but are good accurate for making sure there are coons in the tree. That's the reason I like B&T's too.

Never hunted Coon with hounds, but just bought a Red Bone pup. can't wait to get her...

1 1/2 yrs ago I ran Mtn Lions in Idaho with an outfitter. We used Plotts, Blues and Black/Tans. Some were pure breds, some were crosses with extremely good bloodlines. Them Lion guys are 100% dead serious when it comes to hounds...

I bagged one and it was a blast. Them Dogs worked their tails off and we bagged a 125 lb female about 3 miles back in some rugged country.

Here's a pic...hopefully....

Walkers/Blueticks are my choice breeds. In general I'd say walkers are quicker hotter nosed dogs while blueticks(my are old style blues- big ears big heads big in general) are more accurate and cold nosed and LOUD...they do tend to "take their time" sometimes.

It does not matter what breed you hunt.Theres good and bad in all breeds....A little free advice............Just starting out...Dont mess with pups..You can always get pups to work with after you have a broke dog.. Save your money try out a bunch of dogs. It can take anywhere from 1-30 dogs to find one you like....Real good dogs are not cheap. Ones with problems are.....But Ive bought several real nice dogs for $500-1000 because they were a little older..If you bought a dog thats 6 years old you should be able to get at least 4 good years of hunting out of that dog..Unless some thing bad happens.....Besides haveing a good coon light you will need a tracker....Its the best money you will ever spend...........Its like trucks you can find good deals if you look around....((Also)) be aware of some breeders taking advantage of you....I talked to some real nice people a few weeks...They just started getting into coonhunting...They purchased a puppy for $750 and the first litter of pups she has. The breeder wants her bred to there stud dog and get first pick of the litter.......Ive heard this breeder has been doing this ...But ..........Its just crazy.........LOL.........Thats way to much for those pups......The funny part the breeder is not really known for hunting dogs ...They are known for show dogs but they do own a Grand nite ch..The breeder told them they could sell all there pups for the same price..It wont happen.............((Most)) top show pups sell for 100-200.. Some might go for $200-400 if they are out of hunting dogs that you can show..................Good Luck..........

Listen to Chet. Save your money and get you a decent hound from the start. There are nice dogs for a small amount of money but few and fare between. It will save you alot of long nights and alot of aggravation and time. And I promise it will be more fun to tree a coon with an older dog instead of chasing one that is behind a deer or trying to get one to leave the truck. Good luck. Remember there are some smooth talkers out there to. You need to at least go hunting a few times with the seller before you buy.

i too agree with chet get a good broke dog it will cost you about $1000. $500 for a tracker. $300 for shocker. and keep about $1000 in the bank for them fines your gonna get cuz them dogs have done woke up your neighbors or run a coon onto some senator's land.
