Or, you could buddy up with some hunters that have good dogs, and talk to them about breeding their dogs, and maybe they could cut you a deal and help you train your dog with their dogs. Cheap dogs are not neccesarily bad dogs, blood does make a big difference, but a free dog has enough chance to tree a coon and make a dog with a little work and patience. Try hunting with the parents of the dog and see if you like their style and brains, if you like it then you shouldn't have to go the expensive route. JMHO.

It depends on how much time you want to put in a dog, and if you are a "Right Now" person. Me personally, I bought a 9 month old pup and trained it myself and enjoyed every minute of it. But I am a pleasure hunter and for me it is all about being in the woods and watching the pup progress. Some people prefer a powerhouse dog from the start, it depends on what you want. Every time I hunt with someone different and they comment on my dog, it make me feel great because I know I am responsible for his training. Plus I think it builds a stronger bond if you are the sole owner from day one.

Good Luck!!!

Thunderthurston, you hit the nail on the head in my eyes, that's what I like about training my own pup. You can train them to hunt with your own style, youv'e taken an animal with just potential and turned it into a hound. To me, that's what it's all about. Good Post!

BigBend,

I have hunted with a couple guys this year, great guys, but in one kill season they went through about 3 dogs apiece. They were trying to find an accurate fast treeing dog to win hunts with. They never did to my knowledge, either they slick treed 40% of the time or run the hair off a deer. They thought I was crazy sticking to the slow but accurate Black&Tan pup, but he'll be two in July and we treed between 35-50 this past season. His best night was 4 in an hour, his worst was 0 and me wading in the marsh after him. He works a track much faster now, but he still circles the tree alot before he trees. Maybe we will enter the hunts someday to meet people, or maybe we will just do our own thing, just as long as we are in the woods.

I'm hoping to get my B&T going good and try to take her to some hunts. She's 8-9 months old right now and she's getting better everytime I take her out.

Too bad you live in OK, and I am moving to PA this summer. I would like to hunt with you sometime, I think we have the same idea on what hunting is about. Of course I am partial to B&Ts also, but I'll cast with any breed if they hunt. Maybe if I can bring myself up to comp hunting and dealing with all the politics our paths will cross and you can show that B&T of yours.

I agree to save your $$ and get one thats already broke. I've seen young people get pups and never work em enough to get them started before they hang thier hats up and decide the pup isnt any good.

As far as which breed. We have a Blue tick and an English and have had Walkers too. Our blue is a meat dog but I still like the English better. Maybe because I'm a girly-girl and like all the neat colors they come in! :D She got a LOUD mouth too.Her fur feels like velvet too. The Walker we had was quick and barked a mile a minute but I personally like the English. Like everyone else says Not one breed is better than the other and theres always the exception to any rule.

I also agree with chet on the pup part. As far as breed, 1st decide what is appealing to You. Many a good dogs have been passed up to others not because of their ability but because the owner just didnt like the overall hound. Decide on what mouth type You like. Do You want a cold nose dog or a hot nose dog or inbetween. Do You want a fast hound or slow hound. How do want the dog to tree; on the wood belly rubbing or sitting looking up. Do You want a chop, bawl, sqeally mouth hound? Hounds can be really tall and broad to tall and slender all the way down to short and slender or short and broad. Dont spen a bunch of money on a hound until You know what You like is the best advice I can give You.

The best way to find something suitable is to go to a local hunting event and meet some people who hunt that live near you and can help out. Here's UKC's list of upcoming events:
http://www.ukcdogs.com/CoonhoundEvents.htm

Ask around, and try out available dogs with someone experienced, who can point out their strengths and weaknesses to you. Breed is not as important as individual temperament. Find a dog that you like--not everyone likes the same--and let it teach you. Once you have picked a dog, spend as much time in the woods with it as you can, and observe it closely. Hunting with hounds involves two-way communication with your dog. You will need to learn how to "read" what your dog is saying to you.
Good luck!
