i was out in the woods walking my 6 1/2 month old pup when i saw a squirrel run up a tree . i was just curious so i led him over to the tree and he smelled the track on the ground sniffed up the tree and looked up but that was all he did and boy did he seem happy ! i haven't taken him hunting yet but i'm supposed to be going tomarrow night .he is out of fletcher's stylish jake . my friend had a half brother to mine that treed a coon by himself at 6 months old . if my pup keeps continuing like this how do you think he'll turn out ? i'm going to try to post some pics of him soon .

im am pretty new to trainin or huntin dogs but what i can tell is if a dog aint treein at 6 months dont mean he aint a tree dog. in reality most tree dogs start treein around a year and finshed out at 2 to 3 years old. and dont make the same mistakes i have you need to hunt that dog as much as possible. and dont break him off trash unless you see it l ive said im not veteran at this but read alot of comment on this site and other ones. most people wil tell you the same thing. onther thing is if you want him to be a coon dog i wouldnt let him mess with to many squirrels. oh b/c you dog didnt back at the squirrel does mean he aint goin to turn out his still baby (pup) like they say one here you wouldnt expect you r 4 or 6 year old son to be graduatin at harvard it the same way with them pups. but there always the expection. hope i help.

in my opinion i would rather my dog not start tracking and treeing until about a year old. from what i have seen the ones that start out later are better dogs in the long run because the early starters get burnt out. im not saying that early starters are not good dogs cause obviously they are or they wouldnt start early. i really dont work my dogs on coon very hard until about a year old then i really start training them......i take my pups with me coon hunting when i go but i just let them walk around and get used to being in the woods and being around other dogs. good luck with your pup

Squirrel hunting shouldn't hurt the dog for coon hunting and fills in the dull months around here before coon season starts. He is a bit young for you to worry if he doesn't bark at the tree. Give him lots of practice and time.

i agree, give your dog some time. enjoy the time you spend with your dog in the woods. your dog will do what its been breed to do. give it time and enjoy it too.
