Pick a breed that apeals to you and research the different lines within that breed and find a type that suits your style. All of the different breeds have a wide and very diverse style of hound within. I am particularly fond of Blueticks and Plotts but have hunted and trained hounds of every color that I would be very proud to own.

..........try a Bluetick first.......... 8) But don't tell anyone I told ya.

Right now I'm down to a blind walker and a B&T pup, and I really am impressed with what I'm seeing out of this pup. She seems to be smart and catches on to things quickly. So just for giggles my vote goes to B&T's. I have hunted with dogs of different breeds that really impressed me too. So your Choices are wide open. There are bad-a$$ dogs, as well as bone-heads, in each breed there is. Sometimes a good crossbred dog can be found if papers don't matter to you.

My father used to have a german shepherd that would tree coon like crazy. I prefer walkers but I also have a plott. Breed preference is all in the eye of the be-handler!!!

I think it all depends one how good you train the dog. I have a cur and he is a good hunting dog and my buddies dog is a B&T and she is a good hunting dog. Then again his cousin has a couple of Walkers and they can't tree worth a crap. I'm not sain anything bad about Walkers just his cousin can't train a dog. Now if they were one of owers then they would have a chance to become good dogs.

This is i think the oldest argument in our sport.LOL....I prefer plotts because they ahve the desire and nose to catch, fight and kill the animal leaving the scent whether it be a coon, bear, cat, or boar...I may have just described the COONHOUND in general so i wouldnt really hesitate in trying a different breed, and i really would like to try a blue dog or two...maybe an English, third a redbone, fourth a B&T or maybe, just maybe a good Walker....JMO
