How far do you like your dogs to get from you while coon hunting? I hunt mostly lions but my dogs have and will tree coons but they are used to being put on a lion track so they do not free cast real good they just stay 50-100 yards out in front. does anyone else hunt coons like this?

Mine typically goes about 200 - 400 yards. Makes a circle, checks in. Wish he would fan out a little more buy hey.

I hunt Plott hounds on coon. It depends on there mood they're in to how far they go. Usually they'll go a minimum 600-800 yards & check back if they don't hit a track. Then they will go a mile or more after that especially this time of year if the coons aren't moving much. Our rut really hasn't started good yet.
Wednesday night I picked up my one dog 2.25 miles from where I dumped him.

Furtherest mines ever went is 3.3 miles. It depends on his mood, but he'll go a mile if he can't get a track going.

Mine typically average 600-800 yds but if there isn't much moving they will usually check back. But if there is a boar coon rutting.... I went 2.25 miles lol. and they had the coon!

Sometimes my walker ... acts like a walker:)

To answer your question of anyone hunts coon where the dogs only go 50-100 yds. I have a buddy that used to have a coonhound that only went 100yds. We would park at opposite ends of gated rds on State Forest in Pa. & we'd walk from one truck to the other. He would take a track 1/2 to a mile to get it treed & stated put he just didn't free cast.

I do have a 1 1/2yr old female now that won't go more than 150yds & I hope she stays that way so I can pleasure hunt her on some back road farm land where there are more roads to worry about. My other 3 go way to deep when the coons aren't movin to hunt them in some places.

The Dam of this pup, her farthest chase was 3.97 miles & had the coon & was shot to her because 3 other dogs dropped off short & slicked so I felt she earned it.

If there are feeders on the land he will hunt no more than 600 yds. If it is on a non feeder land he will hunt out over 1000 yards.

My dog generally hunts 600-800 yards but if he don't pick up a track by then, he goes deep.

My walkers go 800-900 yards and if they don't pick up a coon they come back to the truck.

My wife trains my hounds to be pets and walk on a leash. Because of this I have a hard time getting them to cut loose and hunt. They stay within sight maybe 200 yds until they get older and really good hunters. Drives me nuts. I want a dog that goes until it finds a coon. I have them on GPS so if I don't like where they are I'll call them back. Eventually they get it though and will go. Maybe check in after about 45 minutes or so.

My female is young and will stay within 200 yards unless another dog is treed she'll go to it... Now my male is mature and finished, he will usually hunt until treed. Sometimes 1.5 miles or wherever that coon is.. Sometimes on really really cold nights he will stay somewhat close unless he hits a track.
