What are hounds smelling when treed? Are they smelling the tracks of the game on the tree trunk from when the animal treed or are they smelling the actual animal in the tree? I understand that this depends on the size of the tree but what about in a big tree?
Thanks

They are smelling where the coon climbed, however a "layup" dog will sometimes wind a coon laying out on a limb that has been up long enough that they might not be able to pinpoint the tree he climbed.

Do some hunting after daylight where you can see what's going on. You just might be surprised at what you learn.
