This dog was rescued from Shasta Co. Calif. His shelter papers said treeing walker coon hound w a birth date so someone surrendered him and knew his background. He has a coon hound face, white sox and tipped tail, but all tan body. Brett from idaho thought it was a Trigg mix but has not seen a picture. We are in the SF Bay Area so there are NO dogs like him in the area. We get stopped every time out by people on the street and cars stop in traffic to ask about him.
He is very smart and very fast (Trigg?) he likes all animals except raccoons are DEFCON 4. He corners them (we have no trees) and barks like mad but he doesn't bay. Thanks for your expert help.

Looks like a english hound or maybe what used to be called a buckskin walker.

I'd be interested in what traits made the guy think he was part trigg. I'd call him an english but it's neither here nor there. If the guy said he is a walker, he probably is. At least most. Being from the west coast the chances of him being full blooded anything aren't great. Trigg IS a common mix on the west coast but almost any hound is going to seem "fast" around most other dogs. I'm not sure what you mean by "barks like mad but doesn't bay". Baying is generally an action that involves barking like mad. Some hounds just don't have a long bawl. Some have a little squeak and some have a VERY long bawl. It is as individual as a persons voice. Only someone from California would put purple flowers on a male dog. haha

With the recent loss of hunting in California, expect to see lots more of these dogs in the shelters. People won't be keeping them forever if they can't hunt them. There are probably a LOT more in the area than you could imagine....

Brett thought he was part Trigg because i said he had an all tan body and Triggs are a common 1/4 x breed w Walkers for their intelligence and speed. I didn't realize hounds were that fast, there are no hunting hounds around here. He came from Nor Calif. I thought baying involved howling, i just get a tiny bit of that. Oh, the purple lei was given to him on vacation in Kauai, Hawaii, jus livin in in the moment. Lot's of hunting hounds there, going for wild boar,

If he barks he's not all coonhound. Could be mixed with anything but I'd bet at least half coonhound of some kind.

Oh? Tell us more about hounds not barking. Better yet, call animal control in my county and tell them!

First tell me where I said hounds don't bark. Maybe I should have clarified if he ONLY barks he's not all coonhound. Part of what makes hounds hounds is the ability to bawl or bay and they make a wide variety of noises.

There^^^

The dog is mostly, if not all, hound. If the owner listed him as a walker, I'd believe it.
