I have a friend that thinks Black & Tans are better to show, even though he owns and likes Walker dogs. I myself have a walker dog, but I am looking for a bench dog for my little niece to start showing.
I was asking around to see what breed might be the best, and most people saying that black dogs seem to be the best...I have never done bench so I'm not sure what the judges look for, but I think redbones & english are the prettier of dog breeds...what do yall think?

A good black dog is hard to beat, but latly it's been all black Plotts winning in my area. Which don't even meet breed standards.

i didnt know one particular breed was better for showing than another...? i thought if you had a hound that not only met but exceded breed standards than youd have a good chance at winning a bench show- not you win because you have a particular breed of hound...

The best breed for bench shows are the ones that meet the breed standard and don't wiggle and wander and try to jump off the bench!

I own walkers and a black & tan. My B&T is prettier so i'll say B&T. Most of them look alike anyways. My B&T pup is little though.

a little girl to the sport, then I'd go with what breed she loves best. I voted redbone, but I'm a redbone person.
However, it is easier to get a few wins under your belt if there isn't a whole heck of a lot of competition in that breed. So I would look around at what your friends and acquaintances have available, pick a nice good-looking, sweet-tempered pup available locally, but probably not a Walker because there's a lot of competition there. Good luck to her!

Walkers are a lot of competition. But the Walker has lines that have been bred to show for a while and have a solid foundation when it comes to this sport. To me there is nothing like an awesome, cleaned up walker that enters the ring. But, it you have a awesome other breed, then it is hard to beat.
I prefer a walker, but I have a real nice redbone male. He is 13 months old and has won 3 back to back breed wins at the only 3 shows he has entered. Autumn Oaks, Grand American, & Winter Classic.
Walkers can be hard to keep clean for a show and will get stains and rub marks on them. So another breed may be easier for a youth.
If anyone is interested, I have a Redbone male pup by this male for sale. He is going to be national quality, was our pick from the litter.
