My best luck for weight gain is beet pulp, does wonders!! Lot of people mix water with it and make a mush, but I feed it dry and mix it in with their feed.. I feed a mixed oats/corn mollases with vitamin. and mix the pulp with that.
I have a aged stud here now, and he was on the thin side in Nov, and he is looking really good now, and you can see he feels good also.. I feed 3lb coffee can of dry pulp morning and night, I start with about 1/4 can then work up to the full can. I also feed this to young colts, it really does make a difference,
Here is a link about beet pulp...

go to the feed store, get a bag of FLAXSEED take out your trusty coffe grinder and start grindin! its pure fat! it will put weight on them and give them nice shiney coats even if you havnt bathed them all winter! also grinding up black oil sunflowerseeds will put the shine on em too. :D ground flaxseed is the way to go to put weight on em though! and some stores have pre-ground flaxseed and dont get that (unless you dont have a way to grind the seeds) because its better freshly ground...

oh and the flaxseed tastes good too, so you wont have a problem with trying to get them to eat it. all you need is a little cup full each time you feed- it works wonders!

if he's dropping that much feed then you need to have his teeth floated.

I used to own horses, got out of them cuz I was working about 16 hours a day as a stud barn manager/assistant trainer.. That just got to me too much. I am a HUGE morgan horse fan.. I am kinda lookin for a playaround horse, where I can trail ride and possiblity get back into games.
I miss them, I had a morgan/paso fino cross that I used for games she was real good at them.. Barrels was her fav and mine was keyhole and t-barrels...
oh what I would do about the horse loosing weight.. Float the teeth, check for parasites such as hookworms. You can do that by getting a stool sample to your vet or in your case a different vet. Flaxseed, Corn and beet pulp are your best bet on gaining weight. Make sure the horse has PLENTLY of WATER..... too.. To keep the horse hyderated.
NICE LOOKING HORSES.
Ol'Mander--- i really like your paint there. Flashy
Susie-- Cant help it but love that red and white mare.. she is a real nice eye catcher.. What are her lines? she look likes she has alittle Doc in her.
