I've got to say it's pretty much your own opinion, however my vote is in for my home in VA. We have tons of coons, and a year-long "run-only" season and the kill season in OCT through MAR, and we have a wide variety of terrain, from the mountains in the west to the flat plateau in the east. We also have a wide variety of weather. I also like KY myself.

I agree that's it's all about your own opinion because I love hunting my home state of tennessee. We may not have the huge coon of the northern states but there are plenty of them and great woods to hunt em in.

It's not southwest Va. Had a buddy that went to black n tan days in Ohio this year, and the guide took them into the edge of Michigan and said he's never seen that many coon in his life. In Va. you can take more coon in a night east of the Blue Ridge than you can west of the Blue Ridge.

It would have to be Ohio. No doubt. Big coon and more opportunity to get out and run your dog. Plenty of Wildlife areas open to hunting.

I live in Michigan now and the hunting is good when you can hunt. Biggest problem in MI is the dang winter! It lasted about 6 months this year. No one was hunting when there was 3+ foot of snow on the ground. Coon won't even begin to move in that deep of snow unless they get desperate.

Another problem we have here is places to hunt. From mid-April until mid-July you aren't technically supposed to run dogs. You can do damage control for private landowners (you can hunt their land but you better take a gun and have written permission) but you absolutely cannot hunt state ground. Around here the city is getting bigger and bigger all the time. It's almost impossible to find places to coonhunt. I hunt with a guy who's been hunting for almost 50 years and he can't find very many places to go. More and more people keep moving in all the time. Michigan hunting is nice but overall it's a hassle. I drive 25 minutes to my buddy's house and then another half hour just to find a woods to hunt. Add that to the fact that we are on the far western edge of the eastern time zone where it doesn't get good and dark right now until 10 o'clock and it makes it tough for a working man to hunt.

Southern Illinois is where I'm from and the hunting there is good. A lot of coon and plenty of places to go. You can run your dogs year-round and everyone lets you hunt on them. We've driven around before and just turned loose somewhere and never had a problem. Farmers want the coons gone and they mess with home owners stuff too. Also several big hunts from a couple different registries are in that part of the country so you get to go to a couple every year without traveling too much. Makes it easier to save up for those longer trips to a breed days or Autumn Oaks or something.

None of you mentioned NY. Lots of people think of New York City when they hear New York. I live in Syracuse. There are tens of thousands of acres of state land within an hour drive here open to hunting with terrain that is anywhere from swamps to mountains, hardwoods and creeks and plenty of farmland in between. Actually I can access any of that in a half hour. Hundreds of thousands of acreage in the state. Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. Season runs from late October to middle of February. There are a few months closed to running spring til summer for the kits. I would guess our population is right up there with these other states mentioned as well.
