The only time I use coon feeders is in the dead of winter when hunting young dogs. I like for them to run atleast one good track a night. They can work for the reat. There also great for starting pups. But the biggest problem is if other hunters find them. They will kill all the coon off of them. So put them in woods that not many people hunt. And keep them covered pretty good. Meaning don't put them right up front or on paths where everyone can see them. There are atlest three kind that can be made. 1. bucket feeders 2. PVC pipe feeders or 3 tire feeders.

I like these cause i've never had one get tore up by the coon when there empty and can leave them there all yr. I use cheep dog food in some and corn with grape kool aid filled with water. Other wise the deer will get into them.

I use feeders a lot. I usually have five or six young dogs around the place all the time and find a good feeder to be worth it's weight in gold. I also like the benefits it gives the coon populations in the area's I use them. I do not kill many coon in my training area's but I do hunt off of them a lot with the young ones. Feeding and not killing will certainly help out your population and is a good management tool for coon. It can take some time for the population to take hold in a feeder area but if you keep the feeders full and be patient I think you will recieve good benefit from using them. I also agree with the caution on not telling people where they are and placing them well off the beaten path. Treat them top secret or sure enough the local slobs will come in and clean you out. I am speaking from sad experience. I use cheap dog food and cheap maple syrup in mine which are just five and seven gallon buckets with 2 1/2 inch holes near the bottom. I wire them to a tree trunk about 3 feet off the ground or in the crotch of a tree. I hope this helps. Good luck with your new spot.
